"You don't want none of this..."

Sadly, our season came to an end last night. We lost 14-9 to Westside #2. We were just plain flat last night, couldn't get anything going and couldn't get a big hit or big defensive stop when we needed to.

Victor Angon did his part going 2-2 with a run and RBI, Alex Perez followed suit with a hit and an RBI. Jen Sutton chipped in with a double a run and an RBI, Lindsay Hazle walked. Josh Mangan was 3-3 with a 2 home runs, a double and 3 RBI's (he finished with 11 home runs and 24 RBI's to lead the team in both categories). Bryan Lehman had a double an a run. Mark Gerdy had triple an an RBI. Sally Gregoire had a hit and an RBI.

All in all it was a good season, but it's always disappointing when you lose a game you should win.

I want to say a special thanks to Christie, Sally and Lauren (both Lehman and Elwart), who rounded out an already killer female lineup at JD and made us all better players.

There's always next year...and Men's fall ball.

Playoffs Round 1 vs. Rocky Creek

We took one step closer to another championship last night with a decisive 17-5 win over Rocky Creek.

Fighting heat lightning and an umpire who couldn't decide on a strike zone, we kept pounding away and finding ways to get on and score.

Bryan Lehman lead off the game with his first of 2 doubles in the game and finished 3-3 with 2 doubles a triple and a couple of RBIs. Mark Gerdy pitched an effortless game and added a double a triple and an RBI to finish the game 2-3. Josh Mangan blasted 2 more home runs bringing his team leading total to 9 on the year, he had 3 RBIs. Alex Perez had a nice triple negated by over-running 3rd base and getting tagged out (..."I couldn't stop!"). Gary Moneypenny hit the ball hard all night and finished 2-3 with a double and 2 runs.

Not to be outdone by the men, our ladies absolutely punished the opposition by driving in 9 of the 17 runs. Sally Gregoire had 4 RBIs and absolutely crushed the ball every time she got up, she finished 2-2 with 2 runs, 2 doubles and a SAC fly. Christie Popoff had a hit an RBI and a run. Lauren Lehman added 3 more RBI's and an inside the park home run (she also had a GREAT catch at first). Lorene Lake and Lindsay Hazle each had a single. Julia Mangan went 2-2 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI (for those of you scoring at home, that's 5-5, 3 runs, 2 doubles and 3 RBI's in her last 3 games...she's raised her batting average 300 points in the last 3 games, she's hitting .400 on the season!).

Round 1 is done, we play the winner of Kemet vs. Westside #2 at 7:30pm on 8/30 then if/when we win, we'll play at 8:30 the same night for the championship.

Ruling from the Umpires..."The Ryan Fisher Rule"

Most of you are aware of the craziness that happened in the 5th inning of last week's game, to sum up, here's what I wrote to our league commissioner:

"Mauldin had a girl at bat who had hit line drive singles over the 3rd baseman's head her previous 2 at bats. For this at bat our 3rd baseman (Ryan Fisher) lined up just off the infield on the outfield grass behind 3rd (this is debatable, but for argument sake, let's just say he did). She hit a ground ball to him and he threw her out at first. The umpire at 1st called her out and she went back to the bench. At this point, something was said by Mauldin's coach at which time the home plate umpire conferred with the 1st base umpire and then they put her back on first base...no out. I was told by the first base umpire that the reason she wasn't out was because our third baseman can't start out on the grass, he has to be on the infield dirt when a girl is at bat. I didn't argue it then because I wasn't sure about the rule, but I checked, and it's not on our Co-Ed rule sheet (the only rule about actual defensive field position is that "All outfielders must play behind the line marked in the outfield until the ball is hit")."

This was the umpire association's response:

"In my opinion the umpires made a ruling that is not really covered fully in the rule book. In the rule book under Rule 1 the definition of the

Infield. The infield is that portion of the field in fair territory that includes areas normally covered by infielders.

and the next definition clarifies an

Infielder. An infielder is a fielder is a fielder who defends the area of the field around first, second, third, or shortstops areas. (This assists in determining the positioning for the coed slow pitch game).

The umpires probably should have required the third baseman to come back onto the dirt portion to comply with the definition of an infielder prior to the pitch to the batter. This would be similar to the outfielders being required to be behind the line drawn on the outfield ground. I can not find a ruling for the play that happened I would think the ruling should be similar to when a fielder was caught using an illegal glove to make a play. In that situation the coach of the team that is batting has the option:

To take the result of the play and disregard the use of the illegal glove (which could be an out but a run could have scored on the play).

Or to have all base runners to return to the base they were at before the play happened and the batter would return to the batters box and assume the ball and strike count that he had prior to the play and the out would not count.

Just like the outfielders can not play too close to the infield, the infielders should not be allowed to position themselves beyond the infield dirt by the definitions above. I will talk the play over with the umpires involved and hopefully we will call that play the way I have described unless I hear or find out something different. It is a tough play to rule on because there is no ruling to cover it in the rule book."

Basically, the girl should not have been given first base, either she is out or she continues her at bat as if the previous pitch and resulting play never happened.

Nicely done Fisher!

Game #7 - Mauldin Methodist

What looked like another easy win turned into a grind-it-out 1 run game to seal 2nd place in the league.

We started the first inning with 5 runs, then followed with another run in the 3rd to raise the score to 6-1, but then our bats went cold. We couldn't seem to get anything going during the middle innings capped off by Scott Elwart stranding 2 runners in scoring position in the 5th. Meanwhile Mauldin kept coming. The scored 2 in the 3rd to cut it to 6-3, then 3 in the 4th to tie and 1 in the 5th to go up 7-6.

Ryan Fisher led off the top of the 6th with a double then was followed by Josh Mangan's 2 run home run to right (he was 1-3 with 2 RBI and the game winning homer). Mark Gerdy was 3-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Alex Perez had a double. Victor Angon had a double. Julia Mangan extended her hitting streak to 3 hits in 3 at bats. Lorene Lake had an RBI.

We won 8-7.

Playoffs begin 8/23 at 8:30pm, we'll play the winner of the Rocky Creek/Roadies play-in game. Can you hear that?.....it's the sound of a back-to-back championship wanting to come home to JD.

Game 6 - Just another day at the office...

Last night's game was highlighted by Julia Mangan's fine display of hitting. Leading all women (and most of the men) with 2 hits (1 of them a double) Julia catapulted herself to the top of all fantasy softball wish lists. "I know you told me to take a few pitches," she said to her proud husband, Josh (1-1 with a SAC, a double and an RBI), "but I just SAW the pitch!"

Mark Gerdy, playing his first game in almost a month, pitch an outstanding game (he struck out the first batter of the game on 3 pitches) and also hit a home run. Bryan Lehman had a triple, a double and 2 runs. Ryan Fisher hit a home run in the 2nd inning. Victor Angon hit a triple AND beat out an infield single...TO THE 1st BASEMAN! (if you've ever seen Vic run, you know that was an amazing feat). Sally Gregoire had 2 more hits to add to her amazing 11 hits on the season (she's 2nd on the team in hits).

We beat the Roadies 11-5 in a scorcher of a game (game time temp was about 98 degrees) to improve our record to 5-1 (2nd place). Next week we go against Mauldin Methodist (a top 3 team) in the final game of the regular season. Game time is at 7:30pm, bring the kids, it'll be a great game.

Game 5 vs. Eastminster "You just pitch, we'll catch"

Game 5 was a late game (9:45pm start time), but our hitting was timely and consistent.

Bryan Lehman began the game with a leadoff triple then scored on the next play. Josh Mangan's home run streak came to an end, but not before he blasted his 6th in 6 at bats during the first inning (he still finished the game 3-3 with a home run and 4 RBI). Lauren Lehman found ways to be productive by finishing the game 1-1 with a SAC, a walk, an RBI and a run. Victor Angon was 2-2 with a double, a triple and 2 RBI. Julia Mangan added a hit. Whitney King was 2-3 with a run and an RBI. Alex Perez also had a couple of doubles and 2 RBI. Gary Moneypenny hit the ball about 10 feet from the plate but put the craziest spin on the ball that I've ever seen and some how got it to bounce fair for a base hit (I swear to you, the ball was spinning in one direction then changed in mid-air to spin another direction. I've never seen a ball do that...ever).

The game was never really in doubt, we led 10-3, then 15-3 and finished with a 17-6 victory (the final 3 runs were unearned due to an unnamed left fielder who decided to take his eye off the ball on a routine pop-up and dropped what was a sure out). The game would have been boring if not for an irate shortstop from Eastminster in the first inning (you'll have to ask your local JD Softball member to tell the story), but we kept our cool and kept our bats going to improve our record to 4-1.

Next week it's the Roadies at 7:30.

Game 4 vs. Rocky Creek

Yesterday's game was the one game this season that we had to play on the Men's field, but that didn't stop the JD Machine from knocking down another opponent. This time Rocky Creek fell prey to JD's powerful lineup and spectacular defense. JD won 22-4 in 3 innings.

Bryan Lehman led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, he finished 2 for 2 with a home run, a double and 2 RBI's. Alex Perez had a double, 2 RBI's and a run. Gordon Lake nearly tore his shin off by sliding into third base WITH SHORTS ON, but finished with a triple a run and an RBI. Mark Gerdy was monster on the mound and had 2 doubles and an RBI. Sally Gregoire had 3 hits and 2 RBI's, Christie Popoff had 2 hits and 2 RBI's, Lauren Lehman went 3 for 3 with 4 RBI's and an inside-the-park home run (that makes 2 on the day for Lehman's). Jen Sutton continued her solid hitting with 2 more hits a run and an RBI. Susan Elwart also scored a run. Josh Mangan hit his 5th home run in as many at bats (spanning 3 games) on the 2nd pitch he saw, drilling it over the much deeper left field fence (remember, this is the Men's field, not the Co-Ed, the fences are further away). JD improved it's record to 3-1.

We have a BYE next week but will be ready on the 26th when Mauldin Methodist comes to play.
